Steve Bruce makes worrying admission on current West Brom squad

West Brom manager Steve Bruce feels he hasn’t been able to turn around the Baggies squad this summer which has coincided with their poor start to the season.

Albion currently sit 20th in the Championship with just one win from their opening nine matches and are coming off the back of a damaging 3-2 home defeat to Birmingham City.

Bruce feels that his side have played some good stuff, but understands that he will be judged on results, with The Athletic’s Elias Burke suggesting (via his personal Twitter account, 15 September) that Bruce is now under “genuine pressure” at The Hawthorns.

“If I’m being brutally honest, I haven’t been able to turn around the results and turn around the squad to a degree,” said Bruce, as per Birmingham Live on 17 September.

“At the end of the day, you’re judged by results. Some of the stuff we’ve played, I think we’re on the right road, however, I’m aware that we haven’t had the results.”

“We understand what the game is. It’s been proven here – they’ve changed managers too often in the past. Has it worked?

“That’s for others to say, but I know given my record in this league that, given time, I’ll get them to where they want to be. I’m still confident I can do that.”

Last chance saloon

The ten-game mark is a good time to really judge a side and to assess where they could be competing come the end of the season. So far this season we have seen one good 90-minute performance from the Baggies and the odd promising 45-minute display.

Considering the talented free agents that Bruce has added this summer, it’s been so disappointing to see Albion languish in the lower reaches of the table. Jed Wallace and John Swift get into most teams in the Championship and Okay Yokulsu has Premier League class.

All the fingers are pointing at Bruce for failing to get this side performing in the 2022/23 campaign and if they fail to put in a good performance and pick up a result at Norwich then his position will be almost untenable.

Albion have failed to hire a manager with any promise in a long time and there needs to be serious questions asked over who is actually employing the likes of Bruce.

The 61-year-old somehow managed to take the club backwards last season and has done nothing in this campaign to suggest he is the right man for the job.

In other West Brom news, Simon Jordan says there are talks going on behind the scenes at The Hawthorns with Bruce.
