West Brom reporter says ‘disastrously damaging’ Swansea defeat could mark the end for Steve Bruce

Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox insists “change is needed” at The Hawthorns after witnessing West Brom lose 3-2 to Swansea City.

West Brom extended their winless run on Saturday afternoon, with the Baggies conceding two late goals to leave themselves down in 21st in the Championship table.

As a result, Steve Bruce is under huge pressure after recording just one win in 11 matches this campaign.

Cox believes the “toxic atmosphere” shown on Saturday will eventually result in Bruce being sacked.

“It’s just a disastrously damaging afternoon,” said Cox, via Express & Star’s YouTube channel.

“Certainly in terms of the manager’s position, it was a toxic atmosphere. The fans seemed to really let the manager know their thoughts.

“It gets more and more alarming. It seems like the majority of fans want to see a change and I think change is needed. That’s understandable given results, league table and performances.”

Change needed

Cox put it simply: Change is needed.

Bruce looks incapable of turning things around at West Brom. While the team aren’t struggling to create chances and score goals, the defence looks terribly fragile and Bruce seems clueless as to how to change it.

His tactical decisions and team selection simply haven’t been good enough, and one win in 11 is enough to see any manager get the sack.

Frankly, the West Brom board might regret not sacking Bruce over the international break. If they dismiss him now, his replacement jumps right into a hectic schedule with no time to prepare or implement their tactics.

Instead, the board gave Bruce the extra two weeks to prepare – and he has nothing to show for it. The same errors and mistakes that have plagued the season so far were on display, and they won’t magically disappear.

October is a critical period of the season, with six games still yet to be played this month. It’s crucial that the team picks up points in the next few weeks to turn their form around, but it looks unlikely to happen under Bruce.
