Steve Bruce immediate future at West Brom becomes clear with Thursday update

Steve Bruce appears to be safe for at least another day after it emerged via Elias Burke that he will be doing West Brom pre-match media on Friday.

The Baggies host Luton Town on Saturday (8 October) and the embattled manager seems like he will be in charge for it as speculation rages over his future at the club.

Defeat at Preston on Wednesday night has left Albion 22nd in the Championship table and without a win since 20 August, the only victory of the season.

Writing on his personal Twitter account the Athletic journalist said: “Just received notice that Steve Bruce will be doing pre-match media tomorrow ahead of the match against Luton Town on Saturday”.

The former Newcastle boss was tempted out of retirement last season to take the club back into the Premier League, but is instead heading firmly in the wrong direction.

Stay of execution

Whether Ron Gourlay wants to give Bruce more than one transfer window to try to overhaul this team or not it feels like a decision isn’t far away now.

On paper that might be a sensible plan, but if it ends in him having to plot a promotion out of League One it won’t be worth it.

The positive elements of the early weeks of the season are now starting to dry up, and poor results are currently pointing only one direction.

West Brom

Bruce himself isn’t the only one to blame for the situation, with plenty to go around at all levels, but he knows as well as anyone that it is the manager who goes first.

Albion are in a mess, and it is difficult to say if anyone could succeed outright at the Hawthorns right now, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the current boss isn’t able to turn things around.

He made a number of changes for the Preston game, including dropping under fire keeper David Button, but the result was still just as bad.

This was supposed to be a team pushing to get back into the Premier League but they are currently further from that than they have been at any point in recent memory.

In other West Brom news, Chris Lepkowski believes Gourlay will be bypassed to sack Bruce if he doesn’t do it himself.
