Carlos Corberan set for talks to become new West Brom manager after Steve Bruce sacking

Carlos Corberan is set for talks with West Brom about becoming the new manager after Steve Bruce was sacked, according to The Mirror.

The former Huddersfield boss is currently available after leaving Olympiacos earlier this season, following a record of only a pair of wins from 11 matches in all competitions.

Bruce was finally let go after a similar record of just two victories in 15 games this season, with one of those coming in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Baggies are currently 22nd in the Championship table and have picked up only three points since the start of September.

Ron Gourlay is apparently now “assembling a list of options” which is thought to include Corberan, 39, as well as Millwall boss Gary Rowett, and Chris Wilder, who left his post as Middlesbrough boss a week ago and was a previous target for the club.

Front runner

Corberan clearly has an advantage in that he is readily available but if he is the first who is set for talks it could be an indication of the direction of travel in the Hawthorns boardroom.

Having resigned from Huddersfield in the summer after losing the play-off final to Nottingham Forest, he then took a job with the Greek giants who are owned by, Evangelos Marinakis, who is also in charge of Forest.

Having taken the Terriers from 20th at the end of his first season to the brink of promotion to the Premier League in the second he could be an intriguing prospect for Albion, who need something like the same turn-around in even less time.

But his record in the Greek Super League is more concerning, as Marinakis is apparently not moved to get rid of every manager in his employment due to miserable starts since Steve Cooper secured a contract extension at the City Ground on 7 October despite being bottom of the table with just one win.

Bruce’s record in the English second tier was supposed to be a major plus point to his appointment last season, and that has proven to be worth absolutely nothing as the team has regressed badly, even from the miserable low point that saw Valerien Ismael removed.

At least Corberan has far more recent experience of doing well in the division, so perhaps that is of more relevance.

The first move is set to be discussions between the club and the Spaniard, and at least this time there is a shortlist on Gourlay’s desk, unlike last time where he declared Bruce the only option.

In other West Brom news, Sean Dyche has made quite clear that he wants a new job with what he has been doing lately.
