West Brom candidate Carlos Corberan wants to ‘come back and achieve’ in England amid links to vacancy

Former Leeds United assistant and Huddersfield Town manager Carlos Corberan spoke positively about the rumours linking him to the West Brom vacancy.

Since Steve Bruce’s sacking at The Hawthorns, the rumour mill over his replacement has been going into hyperdrive, with a plethora of coaches linked with the West Brom hot seat.

Among them is Corberan, who has been out of a job since September when he was sacked by Greek side Olympiacos.

But the 39-year-old Spaniard seems set on making a return to England and spoke to Sky Sports about the reports linking him with the Baggies.

“For the coach his decision is important to decide which is the right place to go. In which players do you feel the connection from the first moment,” said Corberan to Sky Sports, as quoted by Birmingham Mail.

“This is what I want – the feeling that I did not finish my job here in England. It was the aim to put a team in the Premier League (from) the Championship.”

“Like I told you, if it’s the right place to go. What we love to do is to coach.

“The worst moment for a coach is when you are without a team because of the energy you can have to improve your players, to help your club, to develop their resources, to go to the game and make your fans feel proud of the team. The feeling you have when you achieve this is the best thing that you can feel.”

The right man for the job?

As a young and ambitious manager, Corberan’s links to West Brom should excite Baggies fans.

The pros behind his appointment are his style of play and record with Huddersfield, while his inexperience and recent record in Greece are enough to cause worry.

Corberan’s first taste of English football came at Leeds United, where he was appointed the Under-23s manager in 2017. Following Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road, the Argentine promoted him to work alongside the first team.

Just two years later, Corberan caught the eye of Huddersfield, and he led the Terriers to the Championship play-off final before losing out to Nottingham Forest.

His record at Huddersfield was fairly impressive, and his experience of the Championship will serve him well in West Brom’s managerial hunt. He came within minutes of earning Premier League promotion, and that has to be the Baggies’ priority with their next boss.

Corberan is clearly excited at the idea of succeeding Bruce, but it’s down to the West Brom board to judge whether he’s the best candidate.
