West Brom: Michael Carrick unlikely to take Middlesbrough job

West Brom could’ve been handed an unlikely boost in their manager hunt with Michael Carrick now unlikely to take the Middlesbrough job.

The Mirror reported on 10 October that the former Manchester United coach was closing in on a move to the Riverside after Chris Wilder’s departure.

The Northern Echo (10 October) also suggested that the Baggies were eying the 41-year-old as a managerial option to replace Steve Bruce.

However, it now appears that the Baggies could have a free run to make Carrick their new boss after The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards revealed (via his personal Twitter, 11 October) that it is “very unlikely” that Carrick will take the Middlesborough job.

Carrick would certainly be an interesting appointment for the Baggies and one that would be the polar opposite of Bruce. The 41-year-old would be a gamble and considering it’s the middle of the season, he wouldn’t have a transfer window to try and recruit players.

A safer option for Albion would be a manager who has recent pedigree in taking a side out of the Championship, and who is slightly more likeable than Bruce.

Considering the club’s recent history in employing managers, The Hawthorns’ faithful shouldn’t hold out much hope when it comes to their latest manager search. Potentially looking at a successful manager with experience from League One could also be a route for the club’s hierarchy to look into.

Kieran McKenna has been a revelation since taking the reigns at Ipswich Town, playing an attractive brand of football, whilst also remaining defensively sound. Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher is another name that could be thrown into the mix, having taken Argyle seamlessly to the top of the table.

In other West Brom news, speculation is only set to increase surrounding one name as the Baggies job is now available
