Michael Carrick surely rules himself out of West Brom manager contention

Michael Carrick feels it’s not the right time to return to work in football – and that surely means he is now out of contention to be the new West Brom boss.

The Northern Echo reported [10 October] that the former Manchester United midfielder was being chased by both Middlesborough and the Baggies.

However, it’s been reported by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell (11 October) that the 41-year-old is uncertain about returning to work in professional football at the moment.

Carrick would’ve been an interesting management choice for the Baggies to look into. He’s at the opposite end of the spectrum to Steve Bruce when it comes to his career, and could’ve potentially been a risk for Albion.

West Brom should either be looking to bring in a manager with recent success in the Championship or either delve into the lower leagues where there are plenty of people in work who would take the job at The Hawthorns.

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna should be someone the club consider after his superb work at Portman Road since he took over from Paul Cook. The former Manchester United coach plays an attractive style of football that’s also rigid defensively.

West Brom

Steven Schumacher is another name that could well be thrown into the mix after taking Plymouth Argyle to the top of League One. Much like McKenna, he’s a young manager with experience in the EFL, which could be a route the Baggies go down.

It’s important to remember that West Brom do have a talented squad, that a number of managers currently in jobs would love to work with. Let’s hope the board finally make a forward-thinking appointment in the coming days.

In other West Brom news, speculation is only set to increase surrounding one name as the Baggies job is now available
