West Brom want to hire Rob Edwards as new manager after sacking Steve Bruce

West Brom have shown an interest in hiring Rob Edwards to replace Steve Bruce, but face competition from Middlesbrough according to iNews.

Edwards was the manager of Watford at the start of the Championship campaign before being sacked after just ten games, leaving him free on the market for other clubs to potentially appoint.

And after finally sacking Bruce on Monday while sitting in 22nd place in the table, Edwards has now emerged as a target for the Baggies although they will have to fend off interest from Middlesbrough too.

The report from iNews [12 October] claims that Edwards is being pushed as a contender for the job at Tyneside but that could be complicated by the fact West Brom want him.

The Baggies are unlikely to make an appointment before Saturday’s clash with Reading, meaning the new man’s first game could come against Bristol City on Tuesday night or Millwall next Saturday afternoon.

Targets

There are a lot of names being linked with the job at The Hawthorns right now, which points to the complete lack of a plan in place at the club.

It was clear that Ron Gourlay didn’t want to sack Bruce to begin with but was left with no choice when fans turned and results didn’t pick up, leaving the club in the relegation zone when the aim was promotion.

But that approach means there has been a scattergun of rumours about who the new man will be and nobody seems to have a genuine answer, including the Baggies board themselves.

West Brom need to bring in someone with experience but also who is in touch with modern game more than Bruce was, because this squad is far too strong to be sat where it is in the table.

Edwards would be a good fit, and he would have a point to prove after the way his Watford stint went, but the club must be wary of the record that got him the sack at Vicarage Road and not jump into an appointment just because he’s the new kid on the block.
