Gary Rowett to West Brom speculation ‘wide of the mark’ as update emerges from London
The Sun have linked Millwall boss Gary Rowett to the West Brom vacancy, but journalist Richard Cawley doesn’t see it happening.
The West Brom manager rumour mill is in full flow, with a handful of candidates linked to the vacant hot seat at The Hawthorns.
Among them is current Milllwall boss Gary Rowett, who has been in charge of the London side since 2019.
The 48-year-old was tipped as some as the favourite to succeed Steve Bruce, but Cawley, who is a journalist for London News Online, refutes the claims.
Via his Twitter, Cawley wrote: “For what it’s worth I don’t think it’s going to happen.
“All indications I’ve had are that stories Gary Rowett is favourite or poised for the job are wide of the mark”
Up in the air
The board are taking their time to come to a full conclusion over who should become the new West Brom boss.
Updates and rumours change by the hour, and it seems there’s still a handful of candidates still in the running. If Rowett is being ruled out by Cawley, then it leaves Chris Wilder, Sean Dyche and Carlos Corberan as the frontrunners.

But as the clock continues to tick, it’s quickly becoming less a matter of who, and more a matter of when.
West Brom are in no position to waste time upon this next appointment. Granted, it’s a huge decision and the club are right to take a good amount of time running through candidates.
But if they haven’t had a candidate stand out throughout the interviewing process then that’s a worrying sign.
The Baggies currently sit in the drop zone and need someone capable of dragging them out of it. A long-term project would be ideal, but frankly West Brom need a manager quicker than they perhaps think.
