Steven Schumacher speaks out over speculation over ‘massive’ West Brom job

Steven Schumacher does not believe there is any substance behind rumours linking him with a move to West Brom from Plymouth Argyle.

Journalist Alan Nixon [16 October] had reported that the 38-year-old was on the Baggies’ radar after sacking Steve Bruce but there has been no contact from Ron Gourlay as of yet.

Schumacher, who currently has Argyle top of League One after Ryan Lowe left last season, has now insisted that while West Brom are a big club, he is not thinking about a move right now.

West Brom

“If there’s been interest from West Brom I think that’s great because that shows we’re doing something well here, because you wouldn’t get spoken about if you were sitting down the bottom of the league or mid-table,” he said, as quoted by the BBC.

“It just shows the good job that everyone’s doing – not just me, and we’re getting recognised with these big clubs. West Brom’s a massive club, but there’s been no contact and as far as I’m concerned there’s probably nothing in it.”

Too soon

There is no doubt that Schumacher is doing a sterling job at Home Park right now but there is a rather large caveat that needs to be taken account of before too many people start waxing lyrical about his ability as a manager.

This is his first job at senior level and he took over a team and club on the rise at Plymouth thanks to the great work put in by Lowe before Preston North End poached him.

West Brom

It is still to be seen how the former central midfielder deals with slumps in form and a club that has a lot of problems flowing from the very top to the very bottom like at The Hawthorns.

It may well be far too soon for him to take on such a difficult job while he is on the up and he may look at it and turn it down anyway with that in mind.

For this season, West Brom need somebody with proven experience of turning around a sinking ship to not only keep the Baggies in the Championship but then drive them towards a promotion push.

In other West Brom news, current interim manager Richard Beale still expects to be the manager for the next Albion game as the search for a new manager goes on.
