West Brom hope to appoint new manager in days as Carlos Corberan interview held

West Brom hope to appoint a new manager within days with interviews firmly underway, according to Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning (19 October), Cox reported that the appointment of Steve Bruce’s successor is “progressing at pace”.

It is understood that interviews are being held on Wednesday while there have also been some done in the last few days.

In another tweet, Cox added that former Huddersfield manager Carlos Corberan is one of the managers who has been interviewed by the Albion.

Corberan, 39, was sacked by Olympiakos on 18 September, just over a month after he was hired by the Greek giants, due to winning just two of his 11 games in charge.

Corberan the man?

Corberan had two decent seasons in charge of Huddersfield before resigning from his position at the John Smith’s Stadium back in July.

The former Leeds Under-23s manager, who worked closely with Marcelo Bielsa, took Huddersfield to a third-placed finish last season before eventually losing the play-off final against Nottingham Forest at Wembley.

His time at Olympiakos will no doubt be one he wants to forget.

The Athens club is expected to win every single game in the Greek Super League but wining just twice in 11 games isn’t anywhere near acceptable for their standards.

However, it’s clear that he’s proven himself to be a very adept manager in the English leagues.

Although he was only working with Leeds’ Under-23s, he helped develop a number of youngsters who are now regularly in Jesse Marsch’s senior squad in the Premier League.

Bielsa’s style of play and methods also rubbed off on the Spaniard while Pep Guardiola once recommended him for a coaching role at Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

Corberan is not exactly a well-known name in English football and a lot of fans might turn their noses up at the idea of hiring him.

However, he’s young, has fresh ideas and proved himself at Huddersfield.

He could be worth the gamble.

In other West Brom news, a manager has spoken out about speculation linking him with the job at The Hawthorns.
