Carlos Carvalhal emerges as ‘serious contender’ for West Brom manager job

Carlos Carvalhal has emerged as a “serious contender” for the West Brom manager’s job with talks between him and the club ongoing, according to Express and Star.

The Portuguese coach was first mentioned for the role by Sky Sports in midweek when they said he was part of a ten-man shortlist, but it now seems as though he has become a real contender for the job.

His most recent role was in the UAE before he resigned at the start of the month, citing a wish to return to Europe as a reason for his exit.

Carvalhal has previously managed Sheffield Wednesday, Swansea and Braga in Portugal, and has taken charge of 20 clubs in the last 22 years.

Oh no

Short-term fix much? This is only going to end badly for the Baggies, and it’s quite clear that they’ve learnt absolutely nothing from the Bruce appointment.

It’s taken far too long to get to a decision here, but for the board to then seemingly settle on Carvalhal as the man to take the club out of the situation it’s currently in and towards promotion is bizarre.

He’s had good spells at clubs in the past, but he’s never really blown anyone away in the division and during his brief stint in the Premier League he did nothing to show that was his level.

It’s a sideways step at absolute best and with so many candidates available, it’s pathetic that Ron Gourlay and the hierarchy have decided that he may be the man to step in.

It’s a cheap appointment because he’s available without compensation and it’s seemingly going to be a very long season now going forward.
