West Brom hold talks with Liam Rosenior as club look to avoid paying compensation

Liam Rosenior has had talks with West Brom about taking over as the new manager following the sacking of Steve Bruce, according to The Sun.

The 38-year-old started the season as interim boss at Derby after Wayne Rooney’s resignation in the summer, but left the club when they appointed Paul Warne last month.

According to Alan Nixon in The Sun, he is “keen to get back to the dugout” and the Baggies have discussed giving him a “swift return” to management.

The club are apparently particularly interested in coaches who are currently out of work to avoid the need to pay compensation to any other clubs.

As such Carlos Corberan, who according to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett earlier on Saturday, Albion are in “advanced talks” with, and Carlos Carvalhal are also “in the frame”.

The likes of Plymouth’s Steven Schumacher, Millwall’s Gary Rowett, who defeated West Brom 2-1 this weekend, and Wigan boss Leam Richardson are therefore apparently less of an option despite being linked.

Cheap

Fans will have to hope that the club aren’t just targeting options based on them being available without a cost and that they are instead making a decision based on suitability.

If it is true that Corberan is about to become manager imminently he does come with the benefit of recent experience of mounting a playoff run last season with Huddersfield.

Rosenior has less on his CV in terms of actual management, and as with Jody Morris could represent a risk to throw into a rescue job right now.

He was relegated to League One with the Rams at the end of last season as Rooney’s assistant, but given the financial turmoil and points deduction there it can hardly been held against him.

Whether the brief doomed spell Corberan had in charge of Olympiacos is a reason to steer clear will have to be considered, as the record he had in Greece was disconcertingly similar to Bruce’s this season.

Whoever takes over it is going to need to be sooner rather than later, as it appears that the new manager bounce under Richard Beale lasted all of 90 minutes at Reading.

Granted, the win on 15 October was very positive, especially in light of what had gone before it, but two more losses subsequently have very much taken the shine off things.

In other West Brom news, one senior figure’s influence has been written off as useless considering the disarray in their time at the club.
