Carlos Corberan run with Huddersfield should give West Brom hope for 2022/23 season

Finally, West Brom have concluded their long-winded search for a new manager with Carlos Corberan taking the reigns at The Hawthorns.

It’s fair to say the search took far too long to conclude considering the whole of the football world could see Steve Bruce’s time at the club was going to come to an end.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard is now in charge and faces the challenge of turning one of the fastest sinking ships in the EFL around. Quite how he will do it remains to be seen, but Baggies fans should cling to a glimmer of hope from his time at Huddersfield.

The Terriers were so close to promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2021/22 season after narrowly missing out to Nottingham Forest. However, they were only in that position because they stuck by Corberan and allowed him to put together a magical run of form from December 2021 onwards.

They won 15 games and only lost two matches as they went on to finish third in the Championship. The task at West Brom is clearly harder, with the Baggies now in the relegation zone.

However, this West Brom side, whether you like it or not, is littered with talent all over the pitch. Jed Wallace, John Swift, Tom Rogic and Karlan Grant all get into most Championship sides.

Corberan was working against the odds at Huddersfield and overachieved with the group of players he had at his disposal.

If he can build a solid base at The Hawthorns and find a way to get his frontmen firing, then there should be no reason why he can’t pull the Baggies to a more respectably position. The second tier is certainly not as competitive as it was in recent years, with pretty much every side capable of beating each other.

After a number of dreadful appointments by the club let’s hope Corberan is the man to get Albion pointing in the right direction.
