West Brom can turn World Cup break into a ‘blessing’ – Kevin Campbell

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

There’s a good chance West Brom head into the World Cup break in the relegation zone, but Kevin Campbell insists it’ll be a ‘blessing’ for the Baggies.

West Brom currently sit 23rd in the Championship but will hope that new boss Carlos Corberan can steer them away from danger.

But the Spaniard only has three fixtures in charge of the Baggies before the World Cup break begins. With a three-point gap to safety, West Brom could spend Christmas in the drop zone.

However, instead of looking at the negatives of West Brom’s current situation, former Baggies striker Campbell sees it as a great opportunity for Corberan to settle in.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Campbell said: “It is a definite positive. If they find themselves in the relegation zone or even just out of it – let’s be brutally honest – West Brom shouldn’t be there.

“The football club shouldn’t be there.

“So any chance you get to reset with a new manager coming in to work with the players, and a chance to take stock, to improve things and go again. Any chance you get you do that.

“I truly, truly believe it’ll be a blessing for West Bromwich Albion.”

Looking at the table will definitely knock the confidence of the players at the moment, but the squad will also be excited at the prospect of working under Corberan – and that has to keep them going over the winter.

With Corberan likely to demand the squad to play in a particular shape and style, the World Cup break gives him a fantastic opportunity to drill his ideas into the squad so they’re more familiar with his demands after the Championship returns.

On top of that, the World Cup break takes us almost to the January transfer window, and the break will allow Corberan to assess his squad and identify any areas that desperately need addressing in the window.

Then, he and the club can plan any transfer activity ready for the season to get back in full swing.
