West Brom sporting director position set for discussion with Ron Gourlay

West Brom CEO Ron Gourlay has assured supporters that he intends to discuss the potential of hiring a sporting director at The Hawthorns.

The position does not currently exist at Albion but the CEO is likely to sit down with new manager Carlos Corberan in the coming weeks to debate whether that should change.

The Spaniard, formerly of Huddersfield Town and Olympiakos, will take charge of his first game as Baggies manager on Saturday (29 October) when they take on Sheffield United on home turf.

The two sat in front of both national and local media on Thursday (27 October) to discuss a range of topics and the sporting director role quickly came up.

“I will speak to Carlos about that,” Gourlay said, as quoted by Birmingham Live. “It’s something that myself, Carlos and the technical board will sit down and discuss that.”

Why not?

West Brom must be one of the very few clubs in the Championship to not have somebody in this position or something similar and it is clearly seeing them left far behind the curve.

If they were on a par with the rest of the division, then they would not find themselves in 23rd in the table and in complete disarray before Corberan has taken a game in the dugout.

The Spanish coach, who worked under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United, would surely want another person at the club with a very good knowledge of the modern game and market so he can focus on coaching the players at the club.

Ultimately, that is what Corberan is best at and always has been so he will need help in the transfer market just to give him one less thing to do.

There is plenty to get rid of first, however, and it could be a long road back to where West Brom should be.

In other West Brom news, Ally Robertson does not want the Baggies squad thinking too much with master tactician Corberan in charge.
