West Brom duo might not fit into Carlos Corberan tactical preference

Attacking midfielders may not fit into Carlos Corberan’s plans at West Brom which has put two players in limbo, according to The Athletic.

Steve Bruce’s desire to play a 4-2-3-1 saw John Swift become the first summer signing for the Baggies before Tom Rogic joined the club just after the transfer window closed.

But the new manager prefers a 3-4-3 system that does not utilise a proper number 10 role and that could potentially leave Swift and Rogic having to adapt to play games.

The Spaniard is a very hands-on coach, luckily, which could see both retrained to play either in a wide area or deeper as a more balanced central midfielder.

There are signs of hope, however, as Rogic came off the bench to assist Okay Yokuslu’s winner against Blackpool on Tuesday (1 November) to give Corberan his first win at The Hawthorns.

Find a way

The new boss may not prefer number 10s in his traditional system but he simply has to find a way to not only get Swift in the side but providing similar goals and assists to what he managed at Reading last season.

Double figures in both categories are single-handedly what kept the Royals in the Championship and similar output would certainly see West Brom begin to raise up the standings themselves.

Both players could do a job alongside Yokuslu in a more natural central midfield role as there would be three centre-halves behind them to provide cover when they venture forward in attack.

Equally, having Swift as a right wing-back and Jed Wallace on the other flank could really open a lot of doors for Corberan with the exceptional delivery of both players likely to cause plenty of problems.

There are options for the new man in charge but the one thing he absolutely cannot do is leave both players in the shadows without trying them out in a new role once or twice.

In other West Brom news, this player is making “a lot of noise” at one of Albion’s league rivals as a move to The Hawthorns is mooted.
