Sky Sports pundit thrilled with ‘superb’ West Brom fans over Hawthorns protection
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
West Brom fans jumped to action to defend The Hawthorns from being sold by applying for it to be listed as an Asset of Community Value.
West Brom fans voiced their opinion on owner Guochuan Lai by protesting against his ownership during the Championship clash against Blackpool last week.
The ‘Shine a Light’ protest [Birmingham Mail] conducted by fans was out of anger towards a number of loans taken out by Lai that could cripple the club’s finances in a similar fashion to Derby County.

In response to Lai’s loans, fan group Shareholders 4 Albion filed an application to protect The Hawthorns by having it listed as an Asset of Community Value to eliminate any chance of it being sold to raise funds. [Express & Star]
Ex-Baggies striker Kevin Campbell is delighted to see supporters taking action, and heaped praise on the “superb” fanbase at the club.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Campbell said: “You don’t want to move the football club. It’s a key part of the community and it should be protected.
“The history of that club and the players that have played there and the fanbase – it’s a superb club – I’m pleased to hear that the fans are protecting it.
“West Bromwich Albion are a nice institution in that part of the world, trust me.”

The ‘Shine a Light’ protest is certainly not the last time Baggies fans will voice their opinion on the worrying ownership of Lai.
Regardless of on-pitch performances, the running of the club behind the scenes is extremely worrying and after witnessing what happened to the likes of Derby County and Bury in recent seasons it’s good to see fans band together to protect the club.
