Joe Lycett shares West Brom joke in powerful anti-Qatar message to David Beckham
Comedian Joe Lycett has taken a dig at West Brom during a powerful anti-Qatar message directed at football icon David Beckham on social media.
Beckham is known to be a gay icon having spoken out publicly about homophobia in football in the past, but has signed a deal to be an ambassador for the Qatar World Cup this month despite their anti-gay stance in the country.
This has led to Lycett to call him out and urge him to terminate his deal, which would in turn see Lycett donate £10,000 to charity, but in a video published on his official Twitter account (13 November) he threw in a quick dig at the Baggies.
“You have always talked about the power of football as a force for good. Which suggests to me you have never seen West Brom,” he joked.
“But generally I agree – so with that in mind I’m giving you a choice. If you end your relationship with Qatar I will donate ten grand of my own money (that’s a grand for every million you’re reportedly getting) to charities that support queer people in football.”
Ouch
Okay, we’ll admit we laughed at that one, but only because we’re nowhere near as bad as we were three weeks ago now thanks to Carlos Corberan.
The World Cup break has arguably come at the worst possible time, with the team winning three games in a row and moving out of the relegation zone having played a game less than the sides below us.
But the manager will now get a prolonged period of time to work with the squad and get his ideas across even more, while we all get to watch the best players in the world represent their countries for the ultimate prize in the sport.
Hopefully once we return to action in December we can start trying to climb the table properly and potentially push to “do a Nottingham Forest” by claiming a playoff place despite how unlikely it looks.
If we can do that we’ll most likely stop being the butt of jokes like these, but for now we have to just accept that we’re an easy target.
