Kenneth Zohore in bizarre substitution mess as West Brom lose friendly v Elche in Spain
West Brom suffered a 1-0 defeat to Elche in a friendly match on Friday, and Kenneth Zohore’s bizarre substitution situation raised eyebrows.
West Brom have spent the last week in Spain on a hot-weather training camp ahead of their Championship return on December 12. During the camp, the Baggies organised a behind-closed-doors friendly against Elche.
The game took place on Friday morning, with the Spanish side coming away as 1-0 victors. Carlos Corberan made a full 11 changes to his side at half-time, but that didn’t include Zohore despite him being bizarrely named as the only substitute before kick-off.
West Brom posted both the first-half and second-half lineups on Twitter showing the full 11 changes, but Zohore remained benched the whole 90 minutes despite initially appearing as the only bench option.
It was a peculiar series of events, with West Brom fans left confused as they tried to follow updates via social media.
Overlooked
If one thing can be concluded from Zohore’s messy substitution saga, it’s that Corberan clearly doesn’t rate him highly at all.
Daryl Dike and Brandon Thomas-Asante led the line for the Baggies on either side of half-time, with Zohore dropping further and further down the Spaniard’s pecking order.

The 28-year-old joined the Albion back in 2019 for £8million, but his transfer fee is looking more and more extortionate with each passing month. The board need to own up and take the blame for such disastrous transfer business.
It seems Zohore’s only chance of minutes during the second half of the season is if Dike or Thomas-Asante pick up an injury.
With no faith from Corberan and no minutes up for grabs, it seems inevitable that the Danish striker will head for The Hawthorns’ exit as soon as possible.
In other West Brom news, the club’s fair play record may actually be a big concern for Carlos Corberan
