Carlos Corberan’s head is on the block over West Brom move for Jon Russell – Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Campbell believes West Brom interest in Jon Russell comes from Carlos Corberan knowing what he wants and knowing it’s his head on the chopping block.

Corberan previously worked with Russell during his time at Huddersfield Town, where Russell was a crucial part of his Terriers midfield.

Journalist Alan Nixon is now reporting that the Spaniard is wanting to make Russell his first signing at The Hawthorns since he took over from Steve Bruce this season.

Russell has been told he is free to leave next month by Huddersfield boss Mark Fotherington [Yorkshire Live], with the 22-year-old’s contract expiring next summer.

Campbell is pleased to see West Brom following up on Corberan’s demands as ultimately, it’s him that feels the consequences if the signing doesn’t work.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Campbell said: “Corberan knows what he wants.

He knows what he wants to do now he’s had a little bit of time to assess the squad. He knows the player so he’s going to do what works for him.

“His head is on the block.

He’s taken the job and so he is the one who has got to make the right decisions he feels will get the club to move up the league, and Jon Russell is one of them.”

West Brom

Campbell is right, West Brom need to back Corberan after the shambolic Bruce era, and if the Spaniard has requested Russell, the board should comply.

After all, it’s not as though Russell’s signature is going to cost the club too much. He was brilliant at Huddersfield under Corberan and is now available on the cheap – it’s a brilliant bit of business.

Especially considering that the Albion midfield needs a bit of a refresh and that Russell is still only 22 years old. He could be a long-term signing for Corberan and he’ll also add some vital depth to the squad ahead of a hectic end to the season.
