Carlos Corberan labels West Brom a ‘massive’ club after recalling historic European victory

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has claimed the west-midlands club is “massive” before his side returns to Championship action against Sunderland on Monday (12 December).

The Spaniard, who was drafted into the club following the sacking of Steve Bruce, oversaw three consecutive wins before the World Cup break, which helped The Baggies rise above the relegation zone.

His upcoming trip to the Stadium of Light comes six days after West Brom’s famous UEFA Cup win over Valencia in the 1978/79 season, which the 39-year-old reflected on in an interview with Express and Star.

“This club has been massive,” Corberan said. “I saw in the media the other that we beat Valencia, no? In a European international game.

“Imagine how big West Bromwich is?

“That’s why I am here, because for me it’s exciting to be at a club like that one.”

Fans impressed

West Brom fans will surely be loving statements such as this by their new manager.

After a number of uninspired managerial appointments, the early signs suggest they have got this one right.

Corberan got the immediate impact he wanted after arriving before the World Cup break, but what has been more impressive is the three clean sheets registered alongside the wins.

With Semi Ajayi back to full fitness and Kyle Bartley finding form, the Baggies’ defence has seen a stark u-turn, and this could be the base for a potential assault on the Championship upon resumption.

Returning to the Premier League will surely be Corberan’s first major hurdle to mount, and he seems to now be recognising just how big the club is and the challenge that awaits him.

Three points at Sunderland will be a vital reminder to the rest of the league that the Baggies are a threat to be reckoned with, and a drastic rise up the table is not out of the question.
