Andy Carroll: I regretted joining West Brom after just two days at the club

Andy Carroll signed for West Brom back in January and scored three goals in 15 games before leaving for Reading in the summer.

Carroll was brought in by Valerien Ismael as a short-term striker option after Daryl Dike injured himself on his Albion debut.

However, Ismael was sacked shortly after, with Steve Bruce succeeding him at The Hawthorns. From their previous time together at Newcastle United, it was obvious that Carroll and Bruce no longer got on.

The 33-year-old striker led the line for West Brom in a disappointing second half of the season, and then swiftly departed the club in the summer.

After looking back on his West Brom move, Carroll admits that he regretted his decision after just his second day in the West Midlands.

Speaking to Berkshire Live, Carroll said: “To be honest, the second day I was there [at West Brom] I regretted being there.”

Disaster

Bruce’s relationship with Carroll should have been considered by the club before he was announced as Ismael’s replacement.

It was evident that the two didn’t get on, and the team’s chemistry suffered as a result. Thankfully, Baggies fans don’t have to put up with either Bruce or Carroll anymore.

But it’s now down to the club board to learn from their mistakes and consider player-manager relations in the running of the club.

Carroll’s stay at The Hawthorns was never meant to be long-term, but he did end up making a large number of appearances for the club in the second half of the season.

Now at Reading, Carroll couldn’t resist a dig at Bruce after his West Brom sacking. Ahead of the Baggies’ clash with the Royals, Carroll said it’s sad to see managers get the sack… especially when we were guaranteed three points. [Daily Mail]
