West Brom watch Portsmouth midfielder Jay Mingi as transfer news drops

According to Alan Nixon, West Brom are watching Portsmouth midfielder Jay Mingi every week with a summer move to The Hawthorns on the cards.

Carlos Corberan seems to want to improve West Brom’s midfield department in January with Nixon first reporting earlier this month that Huddersfield’s Jon Russell was on his radar.

Nixon has now added to his Patreon that West Brom are monitoring Portsmouth’s Mingi with a summer move in mind. The 22-year-old midfielder’s contract expires in the summer and despite Pompey’s best efforts to extend his deal, a departure is looking increasingly likely.

As per the report: “Huddersfield, West Brom and Birmingham City are said to be monitoring his performances ‘week-in, week-out’, with a view of swooping in the summer.”

It adds that a January bid could be on the cards if others start testing Portsmouth’s resolve after noticing that Mingi is hesitant to re-sign.

Ticks every box

Corberan seems to be targeting a certain type of midfielder in January. Young, athletic and versatile. Mingi ticks every box the Spaniard is looking for.

On top of that, West Brom don’t seem to have a very large budget for the winter market, and Mingi’s cut-price deal could be a shrewd bit of business for the club.

If instead Corberan waits and picks him up for free in the summer, then even better. But the West Brom boss clearly feels short of options in the middle of the pitch this season.

Okay Yukuslu, Tom Rogic and Jayson Molumby have been his go-to options in his favoured system, with Jake Livermore well and truly falling to the bottom of the pecking order.

The 33-year-old desperately needs to be moved on either in January or the summer, and some younger, fresher players need to be brought in. Mingi would be a brilliant start.
