Portsmouth do not have contract option on West Brom target Jay Mingi

Portsmouth do not have the option to extend Jay Mingi’s deal as West Brom eye a move for the in-form midfielder, according to the Portsmouth News.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon revealed (Patreon, 19 December) that Mingi is being watched by the Baggies, along with Championship duo Birmingham and Huddersfield.

Danny Cowley is eager to get the athletic 22-year-old tied down to a new deal, however, it’s believed Mingi is reluctant to commit his future to the club.

Pompey triggered a 12-month extension in May, but no such option is available this year, with the midfielder free to leave in the summer of 2023 (Portsmouth News, 19 December).

Mingi has recently revealed that no contract talks have taken place between himself and the Fratton Park board over a potential extension (Portsmouth News, 14 December).

Promising

Mingi has shone for Pompey since breaking into Cowley’s first team and scored an exquisite goal against Stevenage in the EFL trophy (13 December). He has the ability to drive forward with the ball and beat players at will, which is not seen too often in central midfielders.

He’s at an age where he will be able to develop further and considering he would be a free signing, it could be a clever piece of business from the Baggies. Jake Livermore certainly faces an uncertain future and Carlos Corberan could be eager to add a younger player to his midfield options.

West Brom

Mingi has faced rejection in the past and was picked up by Pompey after a trial in the summer of 2021. He’s certainly taken his opportunity with both hands and could be precisely the type of character the Spaniard will be looking to add to his squad.

This could be an exciting transfer to keep an eye on for The Hawthorns faithful.
