Alex Palmer sends honest message to West Brom fans on Twitter after 1-0 loss v Coventry

Alex Palmer has sent an honest message to The Hawthorns faithful after West Brom suffered a late 1-0 defeat against Coventry City.

Viktor Gyökeres’ stoppage time penalty was enough for the Sky Blues to seal the three points and end Carlos Corberan’s five-game winning run.

Palmer made a string of saves to deny Mark Robins’ side and the 26-year-old has since spoken out after the heartbreaking defeat.

“Gutted with that one. Your support deserved more! We’ll be back stronger but until then, have a great Christmas you Baggies,” said Palmer (personal Twitter account, 21 December).

Gutting

On the balance of play, it’s hard to deny Coventry the three points, but the manner of the defeat will hurt the players. Albion weren’t at the levels we have recently seen from them, with the Sky Blues creating the most clear-cut chances.

A point would’ve been a positive result considering the circumstances. A good side will always pick up points when not quite at their best and that will frustrate Corberan.

Furthermore, it feels like a big opportunity missed in terms of closing the gap to the playoff places. Coventry were just above the Baggies in the table, but have now leapt up to eighth place after the victory. Had Albion picked up three points, they would have sat just two points outside the top six.

The big challenge for the new management and the players is to react in the correct manner and ensure they don’t fall to back-to-back defeats. Albion travel to Bristol City in their next Championship fixture on Boxing Day.
