Portsmouth to receive ‘compensation’ for West Brom transfer target Jay Mingi
West Brom would have to pay a compensation fee if they wish to land Jay Mingi despite the Portsmouth midfielder’s contract expiring in the summer, according to the Portsmouth News.
The Sun’s Alan Nixon revealed (Patreon, 19 December) the Baggies are regularly watching the 22-year-old, with Mingi potentially set to turn down a new contract at Fratton Park.
However, Pompey CEO Andy Cullen has since suggested contract talks are underway with the combative midfielder after an impressive start to the 2022/23 season (Portsmouth News, 20 December).

The Portsmouth News have recently revealed (22 December) that if Mingi does leave the South Coast in the summer, then Pompey would receive “training compensation” for the former West Ham youngster.
Minimal
The “compensation” fee involved would be minimal and it shouldn’t put the Baggies off should they wish to pursue a move for the midfielder. At 22, he’s developing and certainly thriving at League One level. Importantly he has the physical attributes to thrive in the Championship.
Much has been made of the physicality in the bottom two divisions, but the increase in speed and power in the Championship is noticeable. Mingi certainly has the ability to make the jump and considering a number of older heads in the Baggies’ side, a younger face would certainly be welcomed.

Carlos Corberan’s squad does need looking at in January to try and allow the Spaniard to bridge the gap to the top six. However, it remains to be seen how much backing he will be given.
The defeat to Coventry on Wednesday (21 December) was disappointing but shouldn’t take away from what has been an impressive start to life at The Hawthorns. It’s now vital the Baggies react in their next Championship fixture against Bristol City.
