West Brom staff ‘privately’ praise Carlos Corberan impact at The Hawthorns
Backroom staff have “privately” discussed the positive impact Carlos Corberan has had at West Brom despite the Baggies’ loss to Coventry, according to The Athletic’s Elias Burke.
A late penalty from Viktor Gyökeres condemned Albion to their first defeat since Corberan’s first game in charge against Sheffield United.
Despite the loss, Burke has revealed that those close to the Spaniard believe the loss was “inevitable” and that it won’t change his side’s positive trajectory.

“Younger players have welcomed the return of individual chats to discuss personal development programmes and regular advice on how they can improve and force their way into first-team consideration, while club staff are privately remarking on the optimism and energy he has breathed back into the training ground,” wrote The Athletic journalist (22 December).
“Those close to Corberan believe a bump in the road was inevitable, and its arrival does not alter the positive trajectory.”
No need to worry
The manner of the defeat is frustrating, but it shouldn’t take away from what has been an excellent start to life at The Hawthorns for the Spaniard. The Baggies drew far too many games in the early part of the season, so it’s refreshing to see a run of wins on the board.
Albion struggled to hit the levels they’ve shown in recent weeks against the Sky Blues, but Coventry do deserve credit for making life extremely hard for the Baggies. On the balance of play, they deserved their win, and it’s now up to the management team to ensure there is a positive reaction against Bristol City in their next fixture.

There’s still a lot of football to play in the 2022/23 season and playoffs are certainly not out of reach just yet. It’s important to remember that Albion were bottom of the league just a matter of weeks ago, so to now be talking about the top six is remarkable.
