West Brom on back foot as late Christmas Day training held before Bristol City clash

West Brom could face an uphill struggle against Bristol City on Boxing Day after a hectic festive period, which saw them kept late on Christmas Day by Carlos Corberan for extra training.

The Baggies have been in fine form since the arrival of the Spaniard, who has overseen a run of five wins from six Championship matches since the sacking of Steve Bruce.

However, the visit to Ashton Gate (Monday 26 December) will be his side’s fourth game in just 14 days after the World Cup break, and Corberan didn’t relent in his preparations, scheduling an extra-long training session on Christmas Day, according to Express and Star.

The report said: “Corberan’s side are on the back foot somewhat with an extra busy festive schedule due to facing Sunderland on a Monday night and then a game in hand at the Sky Blues.

“The head coach had his players in to train late on Christmas Day yesterday, under the lights at The Hawthorns, before the squad set off for Bristol last night.”

Tired legs

Despite having almost a month off competitive football due to the Qatar World Cup, West Brom have certainly been busy over the recent fortnight as they continue to try and ascend the Championship table.

Considering the tricky schedule, the Spanish boss has marshalled his troops very well and will likely make a few alterations to the side that fell to a 1-0 loss at Coventry earlier this week.

The likes of Daryl Dike and Tom Rogic must have their minutes managed due to concerns over their match fitness, but the Baggies’ squad depth has proven a pleasant surprise.

The likes of Brandon Thomas-Asante can be utilised in the American’s stead, while an abundance of riches in midfield means any of Jayson Molumby, Grady Dinagana or Adam Reach could be used from the offset.

Corberan certainly won’t underestimate a Bristol City side who beat the Baggies 2-0 in mid-October and have bucket-loads of quality in attacking departments.
