Nigel Quashie singles out Okay Yokuslu as he hails West Brom win from the stands at Bristol City

Nigel Quashie picked out Okay Yokuslu as the West Brom man of the match as he hailed the Baggies victory at Bristol City from the stands.

Carlos Corberan made it six wins from eight since he took over with a 2-0 victory at Ashton Gate on Boxing Day (26 December), and moved into the top half of the table in 12th.

Goals from Matt Phillips and Brandon Thomas-Asante took the points, with former Albion midfielder Quashie watching on and delighted by what he saw.

Posting on his personal Twitter account after the game he said: “From the start to finish. Brave on the ball, movement, fitness levels, recovery runs, 2nd balls, aggressive.

“What a finish Brandon Thomas-Asante. Enjoyed standing with you all game baggies! Merry Christmas & Safe Journey Back.”

And responding to a post from the club to vote for a man of the match he added: “Yokuslu looking stronger every game.”

Revival

This is a completely different West Brom side from the one that appeared doomed under Steve Bruce just a matter of weeks ago.

The turnaround speaks as poorly of the former manager as it does well of the new one, since summer signings who arrived with such positive feeling then flattered deceive are now starting to hit the heights.

Tom Rogic is attracting the plaudits that Celtic fans would have expected him to and the returning Yokuslu is starting to to look like a leading midfielder in this league on recent form.

West Brom

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the recent results is that it appears not to be purely a new manager bounce that is liable to be derailed at the first negative result.

A 93rd minute penalty at Coventry was a painful way to lose a tight game on Wednesday (21 December) and would be enough to throw a spanner in the works of an improved mood.

But to bounce back with a comfortable three points where so many players, including Thomas-Asante with a wonderful goal, came out of the game shining suggests this upturn is real.

There’s a long way to go yet but perhaps the preseason goals of a play off run and a push for promotion are no longer so fanciful, so from a fans and players perspective, long may this continue.

In other West Brom news, one Albion star was stunned by the dramatic events he saw recently.
