Jonny Drury fumes as West Brom take out £20m loan for club running costs
West Brom have secured a £20 million loan to finance the running of the football club, and journalist Jonny Drury has been left raging with the decision.
The Baggies have confirmed on Wednesday (28 December) that the loan has been secured against all of their assets and it will be used to finance the general business operations of the football club.
It’s a four-year loan deal, and Drury suggests that someone at Albion must come out and “explain exactly why” it was taken.
“It’s now time someone at Albion, whether it Gourlay, someone on the board that is hardly a board, or Lai, which would be better, come out and explain exactly why this loan has had to be taken out. It is the least the fans deserve,” wrote the Express and Star journalist.
Deaf ears
This is really frustrating for the West Brom fans. It was once a well-run club, but now it is a complete mess.
The Baggies owner Guochuan Lai is hardly present to see what’s going on at the club, and there is no transparency at the moment.
Ron Gourlay has done his best to oversee the day-to-day activities and he has become a sort of scapegoat. The fans deserve an answer.
Carlos Corberan has done an incredible job so far and there has been a shift in momentum in terms of results. However, the club shouldn’t be taking big gambles like this which can have a detrimental effect in the long run.

If the Baggies get into the Premier League in the next one or two years, Lai will have the chance to pay off the loans and sell the club.
However, it can completely backfire as well. If Albion stay in the Championship for a few years, then their future looks really bleak.
It looks like a calculative gamble, and the club are pinning hopes on Corberan to take the club to the Premier League.
