West Brom transfer news emerges after loan agreed with fire sale avoided – BBC reporter

The £20million loan that West Brom have secured from MSD Holdings was made to “avoid a fire sale” of players in the upcoming transfer window, BBC WM reporter Rob Gurney believes.

The Baggies have agreed to take the loan out over four years, as confirmed on Wednesday (28 December), to finance the club’s “general business operations”.

After a dismal start to the season under ex-manager Steve Bruce, Carlos Corberan has overseen a remarkable transformation, which now sees Albion three points outside the play-off places.

And with the January transfer window fast approaching, the loan was necessary to avoid the fire sale of several of the club’s most valuable assets, according to BBC Radio West Midlands reporter Gurney.

He said: “I understand it’s been made to avoid a fire sale of players, and while I’m led to believe promotion this season isn’t an absolute must, it’s clear Albion have to return to the top table sooner rather than later.”

Dangerous game

The recent news that West Brom would have to sell a number of their players if they didn’t secure the loan is a frightening prospect. The west-midlands club has always been well-run, but it is now in tatters following this recent development.

Current owner Guochuan Lai has come under increasing pressure following the news, with the Chineseman looking as though he is hardly involved in the day-to-day running of the club.

With an owner who doesn’t come to matches, as well as the incoming deadline for the repayment of his own loan which fans aren’t exactly confident over, the signs are not good.

For the Baggies’ promotion chances, the news of the loan will place increased pressure on Corberan.

Firstly, he is not likely to get the January investment he first hoped for when arriving at the club, and secondly, if he doesn’t deliver a promotion to the Premier League in the next two years, the club will surely enter financial turmoil.
