Kevin Campbell details ‘key’ West Brom January transfer decision

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Campbell would like to see West Brom target more lower-league “gems” after Brandon Thomas-Asante’s move from League Two Salford in the summer of 2022.

The Baggies dealt mainly in the free agent market in the summer window but turned to the Salford hotshot to ease their striker shortage after Daryl Dike’s injury at the start of the season.

Campbell believes it’s important for the Baggies to have the right recruitment structures in place heading into the January window.

“I think there’s a lot of talent down in the lower leagues and your talent identification and recruitment have to be able to spot these guys and recruit them,” Campbell exclusively told West Brom News.

“We’ve seen it over the years there are certain gems which have gone all the way from non-league all the way to the Premier League and made an impact.”

“Again it’s all about getting the why recruitment structures in place, I think that’s key.”

The Baggies have reportedly already been scouring the lower leagues with Portsmouth midfielder Jay Mingi the latest player to have been watched by the Baggies (The Sun’s Alan Nixon, Patreon, 19 December).

The 22-year-old has been impressive for Danny Cowley’s side in the 2022/23 season and could be available for free in the summer when his current deal comes to a close.
