Finance Expert reacts as Guochuan Lai fails to repay West Brom loan again

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...

Dan Plumley has insisted that getting back to the Premier League is as critical as ever for West Brom after Guochuan Lai missed his loan repayment deadline yet again.

The Baggies owner has instead insisted that the £4.95million loan, plus interest, will be paid back early in 2023, with another loan from MSD Holdings taken out too.

Finance Guru, Plumley, admitted he is worried for the club with something not quite sitting right with the ownership which may end up affecting the players on the pitch eventually.

“That was my worry with this all along,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“There are not many repercussions you can put forward from the club’s point of view as he is the owner of the club – it was always going to be tricky.

“It further compounds the issues at West Brom at the minute, the non-repayment of this loan from the owner, it just paints a picture of something not quite being right from an ownership point of view.

“I think this is another individual concern among West Brom fans that this wraps up against a number of other big concerns, and financially it is a worrying time for the club at the minute and that comes back to how the on-field performance is so critical and getting back to the Premier League becomes more critical to them as opposed to other clubs in a similar time frame.

West Brom

“The Championship is a crazy league so it’s not unrealistic they get into and stay in the play-offs but all of this has to affect the players, you can’t hide away from it.”
