West Brom to surely consider Josh Griffiths recall after Danny Cowley Portsmouth sacking

Things have certainly been positive on the pitch in recent weeks for West Brom with Carlos Corberan’s side picking up another victory, this time against Reading at The Hawthorns.

There’s a lot of positivity at the club at the moment, however, there could well be some uncertainty when it comes to youngster Josh Griffiths and his current loan spell at League One side Portsmouth.

Pompey confirmed on Monday evening (2 January) that they have decided to part ways with Danny and Nicky Cowley after a run of one win in 14 League One matches. The 3-1 defeat to Charlton was the final straw as a “toxic” Fratton Park called for Cowley to be sacked (Portsmouth News, 3 January).

It’s been an up-and-down season for the West Brom loanee, who has been Pompey’s number one throughout the entire campaign to date. There were some teething issues at the start of the season, but Griffiths had seemingly begun to find his feet at the South Coast club.

However, a mistake against Ipswich Town has seen Pompey fans yet again become critical of the 21-year-old shot-stopper. Cowley has stuck by the keeper throughout the whole season and now he has left the club, the Baggies could potentially look to recall the youngster.

It’s been an invaluable experience for Griffiths but the move hasn’t quite worked out as everyone at West Brom would’ve hoped. Furthermore, with a new manager coming in, and with the January window now in full swing, there could be a chance another keeper is added to contest for the number one position.

What the Baggies cannot afford is for the 21-year-old to play a bit-part role in the second half of the season. Albion have an immediate recall for Griffiths, and they could well be obliged to use it after recent developments at Fratton Park (Joe Chapman, 16 September).

In other West Brom news, a £50million takeover approach was made to Lai at the start of the season.
