West Brom transfer news as Morgan Whittaker prefers move to The Hawthorns

Morgan Whittaker’s “preferred destination” for a transfer in the January window is West Brom, according to Planet Swans journalist Phil Sumbler.

The Swansea City winger, who has been recalled from his loan spell at Plymouth Argyle this month, has cropped up as a potential signing for Carlos Corberan’s promotion-chasing side.

The 22-year-old is hot property after starring in League One this season, scoring nine goals and producing seven assists in his 25 appearances at Home Park.

The Planet Swans, who have over 10,000 followers on Twitter report: “News reaches us from a variety of sources – some better than others – that Morgan has a preferred destination of West Brom this window.

“What is unclear is whether the bids that have come through for him that Martin refers to are from the West Midlands.

“There is suggested interest from the Baggies who have moved themselves very much into promotion contention following a change in management and they are very much aware of the form that Morgan showed when he was at Plymouth.”

Strength in depth

Whittaker has been in the form of his life for high-flying Plymouth this campaign and would represent a serious piece of business if the Baggies could get a deal wrapped up.

Despite West Brom impressing in the league under their Spanish manager, some added strength in depth could help them continue to impress themselves on the play-off spots. They currently sit a point off Millwall in sixth place and just 11 points off Sheffield United in second.

In wide areas, the Baggies have Jed Wallace, Matt Phillips and Grady Diangana as their current option, but Whittaker could offer a fresh pair of legs to compete with this trio. The Championship schedule is notoriously crammed, and the likes of 31-year-old Phillips are unlikely to be able to play week-in-week-out football considering this.

With the Swans just three points behind West Brom, a deal could prove tough to broker, but this one could be worth splashing the cash for.
