West Brom injury news as Matt Phillips could be out for three months

West Brom winger Matt Phillips’ injury is worse than first feared and the maestro could now be out of action for up to three months, according to the Express and Star.

Phillips will see a specialist to confirm the exact extent of the injury, which was sustained in the Baggies FA Cup replay win over Chesterfield.

Carlos Corberan admitted that the injury Phillips has suffered is more “serious” than first thought but the club still need medical confirmation for further details.

“Scan results this morning (Friday), prior to the Baggies’ late 2-1 defeat at Burnley, revealed an issue with the tendon in the winger’s muscle,” as quoted by the Express & Star. (21 January)

“Phillips will see a specialist to confirm the exact extent of the injury, sustained late on in the FA Cup win against Chesterfield in midweek, and for a more accurate time-frame but the head coach estimated a period of six to 12 weeks.”

“The injury to him is a more serious injury than we were expecting,” Corberan admitted to the Express & Star.

“So yes, it’s a big injury, a serious injury, we still need the medical confirmation for detail but it’s not an injury of one or two weeks.”

Late business.

The extent of Phillips’ injury could determine whether or not the Albion make any late moves in the January transfer window.

Phillips has become a key cog in Corberan’s setup since the Spaniard arrived at The Hawthorns and the tactician may now look to the market for some backup.

That isn’t to say that Corberan doesn’t already have options in his squad he does, the likes of Grady Diangana, Karlan Grant, Adam Reach, John Swift and Tom Rogic can fill in out wide for the Baggies.

But as the defeat at Turf Moor showed on 20 January, having a squad with multiple options off the bench can help, something that Burnley boss Vincent Kompany used to his full advantage.

It was a solid outing from the Albion and highlights just how far they have come under Corberan and they left Lancashire with their heads held high.

Sometimes gaining points from a side whose momentum is second to none is an impossible feat and that just seemed to be the case with Burnley last night.

In other West Brom news, Albion are trying to sign this Brighton player on loan.
