Carlos Corberan in race against time for next West Brom deal after Nathaniel Chalobah deal wrapped up

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan’s priority is to sign a winger on deadline day having tied up a deal for Nathaniel Chalobah, Tom Collomosse reports.

The former Fulham midfielder’s deal is “done” according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, with Elias Burke having earlier reported he was undergoing a medical ahead of a permanent move inside the window.

Now, attentions have turned to bringing in a wide man in addition but it may be a tough ask in the remaining hours left in the day.

Reporting via Twitter on deadline day (31 January) the Daily Mail journalist wrote: “After tying up the deal for Chalobah, wba priority will be a winger but time running out for Cannonball Corby, who was also showing an interest in his former Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O’Brien.”

Possibly the worst nickname for the West Brom boss yet.

No time to lose

This deadline day has already been a major improvement on the last one, given that a Fulham midfielder has been signed in Chalobah, after Josh Onomah joined Steven Alzate in being moves that fell through at the last on 1 September.

But with Matt Phillips likely out for the rest of the season the Baggies boss would love to bring in cover before the end of the day in attack.

Clearly, scrambling in the final hours is not a position that any manager wants to find themselves in, but it happens every window and there are likely to be opportunities thrown up.

West Brom

It is vital not to lose momentum in the revival Corberan has initiated, with the play offs now a real expectation again, so ensuring the squad is not left short once the window closes is key.

Chalobah through the door is certainly a boost, even if the one-time England international has been short of senior football this season.

The same was somewhat true for the arrivals of Okay Yokuslu and Tom Rogic earlier in the campaign, and both got off to slow starts at the Hawthorns, but Corberan has rejuvenated both so the new signing will hope for the same.

In other West Brom news, the club have been hit by a major late hurdle on another one of their other transfer pursuits before the deadline.
