Danny Cowley shares West Brom promotion ‘threat’ claim after win v Coventry

Former Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley believes West Brom can be a “real threat” at the top of the Championship after the Baggies’ 1-0 win over Coventry City.

Grady Diangana’s 15th-minute goal was enough for Carlos Corberan’s side to get back to winning ways and climb into the playoff places.

Cowley has been particularly impressed with West Brom’s defensive record, with six clean sheets in six games at The Hawthorns.

“They’ve been on a fantastic run and they’ve got a really good squad and now getting everyone back fit,” said Cowley (ITV 4 highlights, 46m, 4 February).

“That’s six wins and six clean sheets at The Hawthorns is a brilliant record, they’ve made really good progress and look a real threat at the top of the division now.”

Formidable

We knew the defensive side of the game would be a focus for Corberan and the performances at The Hawthorns have been a testament to the work the Spaniard has done since his arrival.

Their defensive record has meant they have only needed to score one or two goals to win games and it’s been a huge part in their rise up the table. The win against Coventry was absolutely vital, particularly after the Baggies lost to Burnley.

The Championship table is so tight at the moment that a couple of wins or losses can see a team rise or fall very quickly. The automatic places look like a long shot at present with Sheffield United currently ten points clear of third placed Middlesbrough.

Corberan’s main focus will be to cement his side’s position in the top six and after their FA Cup exit, there are no other distractions for Albion to worry about.
