After not featuring in the Championship for Corberan since he arrived at the Hawthorns, Button recorded a crucial clean sheet, which helped propel the Baggies back into the promotion play-off places.

As quoted via Express and Star (Monday 6 February), Corberan said: “One of the keys that we could dominate the game was his decisions when he had the ball. (He was) being brave and playing with personality.

“He did the one save and after the reactions from the corner, it was very, very important for the team.

“Sometimes the keeper has actions more important than ones they show, one of the important things is communication and positioning to help defenders.”

Strong understudy

When news broke that Palmer had picked up an injury in training, many Baggies fans would have worried this could prove a huge issue for Corberan to deal with in the coming weeks.

However, the dominance Button showed in his box, but more importantly, his maturity with the ball at his feet, will please the management greatly.

Admittedly he didn’t have much to do with his hands, as Coventry only managed to record one shot on goal all game long, but he claimed a couple of corners with authority in the closing stages that would have settled down any nerves within the back four.

Button has a great wealth of experience following stints at a host of football league clubs, and this maturity could help settle West Brom down as they come to terms with Palmer’s injury.

With upcoming fixtures against promotion rivals Blackburn Rovers and Watford on the horizon, Button will definitely be brought into action far more often, and how he stands up to the test is yet to be seen.
