Finance Expert: Premier League hold power over EFL as West Brom watch on
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...
Dan Plumley has insisted that the Premier League hold the power in their dispute with the Football League over their financial dispute to half the gap.
The finance expert reacted with both parties expected to jostle for position when the White Paper is published, with West Brom watching on.
With the independent regulator coming soon, Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan has urged the Premier League and the EFL to find a settlement which could benefit the Baggies and the rest of the Championship.

“I think this is always the narrative,” he exclusively told West Brom News.
“The government have always said they want the Premier League and the Football League to sort this out themselves. The EFL have been pretty clear that can’t happen because the Premier League don’t want to give up as much as they want.

“So, I think we’ll see a bit of jostling for position when we see the white paper and I think the first point of call will be for the Premier League to look to kind of negotiate with the EFL and do the deal themselves.
“What percentage that becomes is going to be the sticking point, so at the minute for rough percentages, the total solidarity payments for the EFL total about 14% in the pot for any given year, the EFL have pitched for 25%. Somewhere in between those is the starting point, but I still think the Premier League holds the power there.”
