Carlos Corberan open to West Brom exit to replace Jesse Marsch at Leeds United

Carlos Corberan would be open to leaving West Brom to return to Leeds United as first team manager, according to the Daily Mail.

The former Elland Road coach has implemented a major turnaround at the Hawthorns since replacing Steve Bruce in October, dragging the Baggies out of a relegation battle and into the play off places.

But with Jesse Marsch sacked from the Premier League side on Monday (6 February) the Spaniard immediately emerged as a candidate to replace him, which reportedly is something the man himself would not be averse to.

The Mail reported on Twitter on Tuesday morning: “West Brom boss Carlos Corberan open to Leeds return.”

In the accompanying story from Sami Mokbel it is reported that the Baggies boss is a “contender” for the top job at Elland Road, although not the only one, and could be convinced to leave the Hawthorns.

It says: “Corberan, who was considered for the Everton job following Frank Lampard’s sacking, could be tempted by a return to Leeds.

“However, there is a feeling the club, primarily [Victor] Orta and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe, will explore other options, too.”

Not now

This would clearly be a nightmare development for West Brom, given that a bit under a season and a half in the Championship under Valerien Ismael and Bruce were largely a miserable affair.

Corberan’s work has reignited the belief at the club, showing he was absolutely the right appointment at the third time of asking since falling out of the top flight.

A promotion push is very much up and running again, with the Baggies currently in sixth place and looking well in contention to make the play offs.

West Brom

Losing the former Huddersfield boss at this point runs the risk of derailing the campaign to the same extent that his arrival breathed life into it.

With Leeds currently only goal-difference outside the relegation zone in the Premier League it may come down to which side Corberan believes has a better chance of being in the top flight next season.

But given he has already rescued one battle against the drop this season he will likely be confident in doing the same again, especially considering the extensive spending the West Yorkshire side have made recently.

West Brom fans will be desperately hoping that the manager has developed a loyalty to the club in his short time in charge, but it is certainly concerning that he is reportedly not out of reach for his former side.

In other West Brom news, a Championship rival’s actions contributed to the Baggies missing out on an exciting signing.
