West Brom boss Carlos Corberan chances to replace Jesse Marsch at Leeds United emerge

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan is not the frontrunner to land the Leeds United job after the sacking of Jesse Marsch, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.

The Baggies boss was immediately named as the top choice to be tasked with rescuing the Premier League side from a relegation battle, in a report from 90min following the Monday sacking of American Marsch.

But while the 39-year-old, who has turned around the Albion season impressively since his appointment on 25 October, is in consideration at Elland Road it appears their hierarchy want top flight experience and are looking elsewhere in the first instance.

Graham Smyth wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post on Monday night (6 February): “The YEP understands the Spaniard is not currently the frontrunner for the vacancy, with the board aiming to bring in experience, but he remains highly thought of at Elland Road and a viable option.”

In a follow-up report on Tuesday (7 February) Smyth added: “Corberan worked under Bielsa at Leeds as Under 23s coach, assisting him with first team affairs in a dual role.

“The Leeds board would ideally like to bring in experience, having expressed concerns over the relative inexperience of Marsch’s backroom staff during his tenure and looked, on a number of occasions, to bolster it.

“Experience of one of Europe’s big five leagues would certainly be seen as ideal.”

Positive

This is exactly the news that Baggies fans want to hear, and while none will be entirely relaxed unless or until somebody else is announced at Leeds it is a reassuring development.

Corberan is likely destined for the Premier League at some point, but given the job he has done since replacing Steve Bruce there is every chance that it will be in charge of West Brom.

A quick return to the top flight had become the norm in the event of relegation over recent years, but amid the calamitous Valerien Ismael and Bruce tenures it was starting to look like a lost cause.

Corberan has rejuvenated the squad and got supporters enjoying watching the team again, which was the first battle in itself.

To have shot up the Championship table so fast is an impressive achievement, and makes promotion via the play offs a realistic ambition.

If the driving force behind that push were to leave three-and-a-half months after he arrived it could easily see things fall apart again.

So by all means the decision-makers in Leeds should stick to their preference for a more experienced manager, and from a West Brom point of view the good work that Corberan is doing at the club can be left uninterrupted.

In other West Brom news, a former player has issued a plea to everyone at the club to do right by the supporters over the issue which could derail the season.
