Carlos Corberan draws delighted reaction from former West Brom player after Leeds United speculation is put to rest
Nigel Quashie has reacted with delight to the “best news all season” at West Brom with Carlos Corberan’s new contract ending his links to Leeds United.
The manager signed an extension to his Baggies deal on Tuesday night to 2027, ruling him out of taking the vacant position at Elland Road.
The news came as a major relief to Albion fans thanks to the Spaniard’s massive improvement of the team since October, and not least to Quashie who was full of respect for the coach.
Reacting on Twitter late on Tuesday night (7 February) the ex-Baggies player wrote: “Best news all season at WBA. Pure respect for Carlos Corberán.
“The moment he arrived the whole squad, club and supporters have gained confidence & belief.
“That in itself shows signs of a top manager that can bring people together on & off the pitch!”
Well said
It is hard to understate the importance of appointing Corberan earlier this season, particularly after getting it so spectacularly wrong with Steve Bruce.
The 39-year-old former Huddersfield manager had rescued what looked like a nailed-on relegation to the third tier, and while his departure now might not have seen the team sink to those depths as quickly as he had lifted it out of them it would certainly have been a hammer blow to the promotion hopes.
So keeping hold of him in the face of interest from the Premier League is an important achievement, no matter if he had interest in the move or not.

The important thing is that he is staying, and there will have been Albion supporters reacting in a similar way to how Quashie did up and down the country.
With three 8pm kick-offs in a row to come this month the club are clearly in the spotlight, and Corberan’s work is a big part of that.
If he can follow through with the job he has done already then there is every chance the ultimate spotlight of the top flight can be shone on the Hawthorns again in the near future.
But at least for now, the night-time clashes with Birmingham, Blackburn and Watford can be tackled with the same confidence that has grown in the past four months rather than the uncertainty that the manager’s exit would have caused.
In other West Brom news, the boss posted a message direct to the supporters after the huge news coming out of the club.
