Chris Lepkowski reacts as West Brom loanee Martin Kelly ruled out for rest of the season

West Brom defender Martin Kelly has been ruled out for the rest of the season, and he will now undergo surgery after picking up a knee injury.

Chris Lepkowski says that the experienced defender was “different class” on his debut for Wigan on loan and he is sad to see the 32-year-old getting injured.

It was indeed a stunning debut for the Latics in their 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Monday night (6 February), but now a serious injury brings an abrupt end to his season.

“Sad to see Martin Kelly ruled out for the season. He looked different class for Wigan on Monday. One of the best showings I’ve seen from a defender this season. People wonder why clubs offer two-year deals to players who have been hampered with injury. This is a good example,” wrote Lepkowski on Twitter.

Bad luck

It’s a really devastating blow for the former Liverpool defender who made the move last month in search of regular football.

Kelly has struggled to make an impact at the Hawthorns. He has managed only six appearances this season, and the Baggies felt a loan move away would be perfect for him.

The vastly experienced right-back grabbed the opportunity with both hands when Wigan came calling. He was desperate to play regular games and completed his move. Wigan are at the bottom of the league table, and they needed Kelly as well to boost their survival hopes.

Unfortunately, Kelly will now go under the knife and start his rehabilitation process. He will still stay with the Wigan squad for the rest of the season.

Kelly is probably not in Carlos Corberan’s plans and chances are high that he could be sold. He has a contract at the club until 2024, so the club have a lot of time to make the final call on his future. At the moment, he should focus on getting back to full fitness after the surgery.
