West Brom injury news: Martin Kelly set to undergo surgery

West Brom defender and Wigan loanee Martin Kelly is set to undergo surgery on his knee imminently, according to journalist Lewis Cox.

The Express and Star journalist shared on Twitter that the 32-year-old defender will miss the rest of the season, and Carlos Corberan has told him that the defender will go under the knife.

Kelly, who picked up the injury on his debut for the Latics against Blackburn on Monday night (6 February), will remain around the Latics squad for the rest of the season.

“Martin Kelly unfortunately ruled out for remainder of season with knee injury sustained on his debut on loan at Wigan. Carlos Corberan told me earlier the experienced defender is set to go under the knife imminently,” wrote Cox on Twitter.

“Comments from Wigan boss Shaun Maloney this afternoon suggest Kelly will remain around the Latics squad for the rest of the season.”

Blow for Kelly

It is indeed a big blow to the player and Wigan. The Latics only signed Kelly on loan during the January window, and this must have hurt them badly.

Kelly was outstanding on his debut for Wigan in the 0-0 draw against Blackburn, but he hobbled off the pitch with 15 minutes to play following a nasty injury.

It’s now confirmed that he won’t play any part for Wigan for the rest of the season, and will go under the knife and start his rehabilitation at the earliest.

West Brom

Kelly has struggled badly at the Hawthorns. He has managed only a handful of games and needed to move elsewhere in search of regular football.

The former Liverpool defender is a fantastic player but this is so heartbreaking for him. Wigan are in the bottom of the Championship and they needed the help of Kelly to boost their survival hopes.

Let’s hope, he can recover quickly and get back to the pitch at the earliest. He has two years left in his current deal at the club, so there’s no hurry to sell him immediately.

In other West Brom news, the boss posted a message direct to the supporters after the huge news coming out of the club.
