West Brom player ratings v Birmingham City as Baggies fail to turn up

Carlos Corberan and his West Brom side travelled to St. Andrews to face Birmingham City on 10 February for a Friday night Championship clash.

Corberan and the Baggies sunk Coventry City at The Hawthorns last time around and were looking to catapult themselves even further up the league table but failed to turn up against a fierce Birmingham side, sinking to a miserable 2-0 defeat.

West Brom News rated the players out of 10 below…

West Brom

David Button – 2

Oh, dear. Button left half the goal wide open for Hannibal to catch him out with a delightful free-kick and even though it was a lovely little finish, the keeper should have done far better – not the first time we have said that.

Darnell Furlong – 4

Struggled against the pacey and skilful Tahith Chong on the wing and constantly looked to be playing on the back foot. Furlong’s been great recently but this was one to forget.

Dara O’Shea – 5

Didn’t do much wrong against the Blues but also didn’t do much right either, a fairly quiet night for O’Shea but he never got started.

Eric Pieters – 4

Pieters showed his age this evening and where his experience at the back has been vital this season, it made him look tired against a young Birmingham attack.

Conor Townsend – 4

Townsend’s end product let him down far too much and he gave away the free-kick which led to the Blues’ first goal, not the full-back’s finest outing.

West Brom

Jayson Molumby – 5

Got bullied in the first half by a relentless Birmingham midfield press and looked like a shadow of the man who put in a fine display against Coventry City.

Okay Yokuslu – 4

Poor from the Turk who is usually so reliable, the maestro looked frustrated throughout in one of his worst performances in an Albion shirt to date.

Marc Albrighton – 4

Albrighton tried, tried and tried again and it’s hard to knock him for that, his end product though left much to be desired.

Jed Wallace – 5

Displayed some brilliant passing in the first half, highlighting why he is one of the most creative players in the league, nevertheless, this very creativity went missing for most of the game when the Baggies needed it most.

West Brom

Grady Diangana – 4

Runs off the ball with a quick turn of pace is what Diagana is known for but he did little of this against Birmingham and was brought off shortly after the second half started.

Daryl Dike – 3

Another very quiet evening from Dike who was kept at bay easily by the Blues’ defence, granted he wasn’t given much to feast on but he needs to do more when up top alone. Surprisingly poor.

Thomas-Asante – 5, Nathaniel Chalobah – 5, John Swift – 5, Karlan Grant – 4, Adam Reach – 5

In other West Brom news, this Baggies striker will be gutted by the news that Corberan has signed a new deal at the Hawthorns.
