Carlos Corberan delivers verdict on ‘wasteful’ West Brom after 3-2 defeat v Watford

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan admits his side “wasted the first half” against Watford at Vicarage Road, with a lack of desire and commitment in their 3-2 defeat.

The Baggies have now gone three games without a win hampering their chances of a playoff push after being seen off by former boss Slaven Bilic in a thrilling Championship contest.

Albion twice levelled after falling behind but were eventually beaten by a Ken Sema shot that deflected in off Erik Pieters, which keeps them 10th in the table and four points from a top-six place.

And speaking after the game [via Express & Star], the Spanish boss admitted his disappointment at his side’s first half showing saying they lacked energy, desire and commitment.

He said: “We wasted the first 45 minutes and we didn’t play. We were on the pitch without showing what we have to show.

“We conceded a couple of chances and they scored one goal. It’s true that we didn’t create enough, because we didn’t put in the energy and desire, or commitment, to play the game.

“In the second half, it was the total opposite. I said to the players at halftime that if we lose the game, we lose the game doing what we are able to do.

“We weren’t competing or showing the skills we have as a team, but in the second half we showed that – attack, personality in the game – but we played every minute of the second half like minute 90 of the game.

Worrying signs

The Baggies have only won two of their last five games in recent weeks after undergoing a superb transformation since Corberan’s appointment in October.

However, since he signed a new deal committing to his project at The Hawthorns, some worrying signs have started to emerge in his team.

West Brom

The Baggies no longer look hungry and aggressive as they showed numerous times before, and their playoff charge is now petering out as a result. They’ve now lost two out of their last three games and find themselves five points off Monday’s opponents.

It’s now a missed opportunity in their chance to reclaim their playoff position and they’ll certainly need to improve and enhance their performance levels further if they are to ignite their charge. They face a rampant Middlesborough side next, and any defensive lapses will be ruthlessly punished by Michael Carrick’s impressively built team.

In other West Brom news, a defender may never feature for the club again after what happened recently and may even leave for free.
