Daryl Dike finds out how cruel life can be in West Brom 1-0 win v Wigan

West Brom striker Daryl Dike found out how “cruel” life can be during West Brom’s 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night [7 March], according to BBC Journalist Ged Scott.

The Baggies secured three priceless points against relegation-threatened in their quest to secure a Championship playoff place, a result which leaves them now just four points from the top six.

Dike, the Baggies’ matchwinner, notched his third goal in as many games but could well have added another but for a crucial save from Latics keeper Ben Amos.

And Scott explained that the American found out how “cruel” life can be for a striker. Speaking on BBC’s live reporting for Tuesday’s Championship games [7 March, 21:29], he said:

“Nothing quite like heading home from less than a foot to make any striker happy.

“Daryl Dike must have thought his luck was in when the ball came back off the bar and all he had to do was nod into an empty net to register his sixth goal of the season.

“But just five minutes later he found out how cruel life can also be for any hopeful forward when he controlled the ball superbly with his back to goal and larruped a superb right-footed volley goalwards, only to see Latics keeper Ben Amos somehow save it.”

Back in form

Dike is certainly back in form and staking his claim to be the Baggies’ permanent main man for the remainder of the campaign, now scoring three goals in his last three games.

Corberan has constantly urged his forwards to improve their goalscoring return and the American who could well feature for the United States national side at the end of the month is certainly delivering when the Baggies need it most.

Despite the result and Dike’s return to form, Corberan’s men hit the bar a remarkable four times against Wigan Athletic which certainly proves that the club are struggling to kill games off in recent weeks.

If the club are to secure their place in the Championship playoff places come May, they certainly need to be more ruthless in front of goal. Dike’s return to form is a significant boost, however and long may it continue.
