Carlos Corberan shares Daryl Dike update after West Brom withdrawal v Cardiff

Carlos Coberan has delivered an update on Daryl Dike after the West Brom striker was substituted during the 1-1 draw against Cardiff on Wednesday 15 March.

The American had put the Baggies ahead in South Wales with a smart first-half finish. However, Sory Kaba’s second-half goal meant the spoils were shared.

The 22-year-old looked lively at the Cardiff City Stadium and Corberan has revealed he was substituted because he “looked fatigued”.

“I was watching him fatigued – just fatigue for me in some point of the game,” Corberan said (quoted by the Daily Mail, 16 March).

“I was watching him struggle to keep the ball or to compete or even to press, at the same time we didn’t want to push others too much because we have some advice from the medical perspective that don’t allow us to give him more minutes.”

Makes sense

Now the situation seems slightly clearer. Dike was impressive during the first half and the decision to remove him early in the second period just didn’t quite make sense.

We are all aware of the American’s injury issues and it was perhaps a smart move from the West Brom boss to cut his evening short, for his and the team’s sake. Wednesday evening’s draw was an extremely disappointing result, particularly after the Baggies were in a comfortable 1-0 lead and controlling the game.

The issues on the road are now becoming detrimental to Albion’s push for the top six. They’ve been immense at The Hawthorns, but they simply cannot rely on their home form to propel them into the playoffs. The game against Millwall is now a must-win.

The South London club occupy the last playoff place and could have extended their gap to the Baggies by the time the two clubs meet on 1 April.

In other West Brom news, a defender may never feature for the club again after what happened and may even leave for free.
